Pawleys Island
This greets visitors at Bummz Grille and Yacht Club.

Pawleys Island, and the area just to the north called Litchfield Beach, is the oldest resort community in the United States. Rice plantation owners traditionally summered there to escape inland heat and mosquitoes.

 

The area is gorgeous with its towering live oaks bearded in Spanish moss. Residents and visitors enjoy slow-paced and relaxed lifestyles.

It’s a busy little bistro with cozy banquettes and booths inside and a pretty courtyard outside. Lunch selections are eclectic and varied such as Tomato, Crab and Jalapeno Soup, Parmesan Encrusted Soft Shell Crab, Grilled Asiago BLT, Crunchy Thai Shrimp Salad, Bistro Style Chicken and Dumplings and Pan Sautéed Grouper with fried spinach and lobster sauce. It’s a roomy and bright space with a purple and blue seaside motif, and there is a great view of the pools on both sides of glass walls and the ocean on the third side. Outdoor oceanfront seating is extremely popular. Executive chef Bill Austin offers an interesting menu and superb daily specials such as Vegetable Lasagna or Fried Flounder with Peach Slaw.

This eatery is a favorite of locals, but visitors are delighted to find it. It is a casual spot open daily for lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor seating. In the season there is live entertainment out on the patio. Regular specials include Monday nights when a pound of shrimp prepared any way you like is $12, and on Tuesday and Wednesday nights a 1 1/4-pound Maine Lobster is $14. The regular menu is a seafood lover’s dream, but there are also steaks, chicken and non-seafood sandwiches.

This is definitely not a typical Mexican restaurant. Sure, they have authentic burritos and enchiladas, but you can also choose Shrimp Ceviche, Ginger Chicken, Pork Carnitas or Pollo Culichi with a creamy poblano pepper sauce that is topped with mushrooms and poblanos. The menu is vast, the atmosphere is festively casual.

Bob Mimms has been serving lunches and dinners for a lot of years. His fresh shrimp, roasted oysters, crab/corn chowder and fish stew are institutions around here, along with a lot of other fine dishes. If you’re visiting for the first time, look for the shark coming out of the roof. Live music is provided several nights a week, in season, out on the screened porch.

This is where people can come tap owner Blair Mathis’ knowledge of fine coffees and enjoy live music. Even more important, he says, “People can come sit, drink coffee, discuss different topics and have real live human interaction.” Blair has an impressive list of dozens of specialty coffee drinks, and he usually has five or so international coffees freshly brewed. There are also baked goods, smoothies and Wi-Fi. It’s open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Owner/chef Louis Osteen has been credited with the revival of gourmet Southern food, which is showcased at this Pawleys Island restaurant. Some folks dress up as befits the cuisine, but after all this is Pawleys Island so “nice casual” also works. Full-blown casual is appropriate in the adjacent Fish Camp Bar.

Over on the deli side breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to noon Mondays through Saturdays. You can get eggs, omelets, wraps, sandwiches, potatoes, bacon, ham and sausage, bagels and pastries. Lunch fare is served until 5 p.m., and choices include cold sandwiches with premium meats; chicken, tuna, shrimp or egg salad; and liverwurst. Hot sandwiches range from Buffalo Chicken and a Healthy Reuben (grilled turkey instead of corned beef) to Philly Cheese Steak and Chicken Cordon Bleu. They offer free local delivery.

Bill and Annette Austin have three restaurants now, and their newest, Ocean One, has an incredible oceanfront view, a fun and exciting menu and an impressive wine list. Ocean One Specialties include Bronzed Rum Drunken Shrimp and Scallops with Pineapple, Coconut Rum Sauce and Unfried Rice; and Herb Crusted Colorado Rack of Lamb with Roasted Shallot and Mint Marmalade and Rosemary Lamb Jus. Steaks range from a 12-ounce Colorado Natural Flat Iron Steak to “Painted Hills” New York Strip, USDA Prime Filet Mignon, USDA Prime Rib and Kobe Style Wagyu Filet Mignon. Fish from around the world – Atlantic swordfish, Hawaiian tuna, Alaskan King salmon, Carolina black grouper and Florida Yellowtail snapper – also are offered with a choice of sauces.

Pizzadelphia Philly Cheesesteaks are made with “Original Philly Steak” and bread shipped in from Philadelphia. You can also get one made with chicken, or a Pizza Steak with mozzarella and sauce. Other sandwiches are Hoagies with a variety of meats and toppings, and hot sandwiches like Roast Beef with gravy on a Kaiser roll, Chicken Parmesan, Meatball and Italian Sausage. Pizza dough is made fresh. There are salads and finger food like Chicken Fingers, Onion Rings, Cheese Fries, Fried Shrimp and Soft Pretzels. Chicken Wings come in hot, mild, barbecue, teriyaki, sweet & hot, garlic Parmesan, sweet & sour or house style. For dessert there are Tastykakes, which are a Philadelphia version of Lil’ Debbie snack cakes. They deliver!

The menu at brewmaster Josh Quigley’s new restaurant in lists a lot of hearty and tasty food like you might expect at a respectable brew pub including the Plowman’s Platter, which is an assortment of cheeses, meat chunks, a hard-boiled egg, cherry peppers, apple wedges, a fresh pretzel and ale mustard, soups of the days, salads, sandwiches and meat-and-potatoes entrees. The Beerimisu dessert is made with lady fingers soaked in bourbon stout.

The bright and tastefully decorated space is an extremely popular local lunch spot. The lunch menu offers hot sandwiches, wraps and hoagies, soups of the day, chili and several salads. The dinner menu lists dishes such as Charlie’s Marinated Chicken Breast; Roast Beef that’s thinly sliced and served open-face on bread with gravy; Grilled Boneless Pork Loin Chop; Barbecued Pork Rib Racks; Crab Cake; and Grilled Tilapia.

Many local golf courses have great little restaurants that come with extraordinary views. True Blue near Pawleys Island is such a place. The peace and quiet (you won’t likely hear any traffic noise) is a bonus. The view from their Southern plantation-style clubhouse is of rolling greens with a forested backdrop. For breakfast there are omelets, pancakes, quiche, fresh fruit, a breakfast wrap and Eggs Benedict or Crabcakes Benedict. At lunchtime you can enjoy seafood dishes, burgers, barbecue and more.

A year after the original location in Litchfield closed, the new Tuscany Bistro opened behind McDonald’s in Pawleys Island, near the Tuesday Morning store. They have Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, lunch and dinner will is served. A few dishes include Lobster Salad, Roman Spring Roll, Tuscan House Salad, Black and Blue Beef, Tuscan Ossobuco, Chicken Parmesan, Salmon Saltimbocca, Pork Chop Rustica, Grouper Florentine and Eggplant Risotto.
