Minnesota’s loss was the north end of the Grand Strand’s gain when Kris and Terry Veigel moved here to open Cakes by the Sea a year ago. The couple has been bakers for more than three decades. They strive for cakes that look fabulous, taste even better and are priced economically. Their cakes and cupcakes are dense and moist, and can come filled with flavored whipped toppings and topped with either whipped or butter cream icings. Recently they were awarded the Small Business of the Year award from the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The sushi here is excellent, as are the steaks, seafood and incredible views of the Intracoastal Waterway and the expensive boats docked at Harbourgate Marina. This is a huge restaurant with lower- and upper-level seating, and loads of both indoor and outdoor seating. A few menu items include Prime Rib, Stuffed Grouper, Chicken Oscar, Beef & Brie Salad and Filet Neptune.

The atmosphere is part diner and part upscale with its exposition kitchen where Derek, a graduate of the culinary arts program at Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, and his father and brother work hard to hustle out orders. International Kitchen also has a Family Size Menu available for delivery and carry-out. You need to order at least one hour in advance, and then you can have the Schnitzel, Scampis, Chicken Parmesan, Pierogis and Golobki in the comfort of your home or office.
Joe’s Bar & Grill
810 Conway Ave.
Across from Barefoot Landing
North Myrtle Beach
272-4666
www.dinejoes.com
It’s hard to explain how a restaurant can serve extremely upscale food in a comfortable casual atmosphere, but Joe’s pulls it off. Not to say the ambiance isn’t well-heeled, because the restaurant is beautifully appointed. But the feeling is one of a lavishly fun vacation rather than prim properness. Just relax and enjoy the marsh view and the menu, like Southern Traditional Trout stuffed with crab and served with Southern Comfort Mushroom Cream Sauce; or Hickory Smoked Chicken with a Bourbon Pecan Glaze.
