North Myrtle Beach
SeaBlue in North Myrtle Beach is known for its small-portioned gourmet fare and excellent wine list.

North Myrtle Beach is just south of Little River and north of Myrtle Beach. This is the Grand Strand’s hot spot for shag dance clubs, and all those shaggers have a wealth of great restaurants from which to choose.

You can find out more about this unique and growing community at www.northmyrtlebeachchamber.net.

And here are some great places to eat:

3500 North Ocean Grill

35th Avenue North at Ocean Boulevard

Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach

By the Cherry Grove Pier

417-1300

www.princeresortonline.com

This new and luxurious restaurant is warm with jewel-like pastels and sun streaming in from windows offering a second-floor oceanfront view. It is located in the Prince Resort at Cherry Grove Pier and features the cuisine of Executive Chef Randy Herndon. His dishes include Jumbo Lump Crab “Martini” with watermelon ganache and a light citrus yuzu-soy dressing; the restaurant’s signature dish Steak Prince, which features a six-ounce filet mignon surrounded by enormous shrimp and scallops cooked in a light and creamy white wine sauce and served with the chef’s spectacular Southern Fried Green Tomatoes. The restaurant also serves spectacular breakfasts.

Blue Room Café

2701 S. Ocean Blvd.

in the Bay Watch Resort

North Myrtle Beach

272-4600

www.patricia.com/myrtle-beach-resorts/bay-watch-resort/blue-room-cafe.asp

A day at the oceanfront Blue Room Cafe starts with hearty Southern breakfast choices including fluffy buttermilk pancakes; cinnamon-spiced French toast; buttermilk biscuits with homemade sausage gravy; and Southern-style grits. Executive Chef Robbie Nicolaisen offers dinner menu choices such as the Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer topped with flavorful ginger-soy marinated cucumber “noodles.” Fried Green Tomatoes are crispy and delicious, and come with a crunchy corn salad. Barbecued Salmon over Summer Succotash is a delightful entrée, and the Double Cut Pork Chop has an apple cider glaze and is served with buttery braised cabbage and sweet potato hash.

Cakes by the Sea

Parkway Plaza, just west of Little River and North Myrtle Beach on S.C. 9

390-5501

www.cakesbythesea.com

Minnesota’s loss was the north end of the Grand Strand’s gain when Kris and Terry Veigel moved here to open Cakes by the Sea a year ago.  The couple has been bakers for more than three decades.  They strive for cakes that look fabulous, taste even better and are priced economically.  Their cakes and cupcakes are dense and moist, and can come filled with flavored whipped toppings and topped with either whipped or butter cream icings.  Recently they were awarded the Small Business of the Year award from the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Deckerz Bar and Grille

Corner of Main Street and Hillside Drive

North Myrtle Beach

280-1200

http://www.deckerznmb.com/

Deckerz has three spacious second- and third-floor decks, a decent little menu and loads of live entertainment. It’s a fun place to mix and mingle; it’s within sight of the beach and has a great view of Ocean Boulevard action.

Dr. Root Beer’s Hall of Foam

Barefoot Landing

North Myrtle Beach

66-FLOAT (663-5628)

www.drrootbeer.com

While you’re enjoying looking vintage root beer memorabilia, you can also enjoy a cup of draft root beer, bottled root beer, white birch beer, lime rickies, waffle ice cream cones, cake cones, root beer floats and Black Cows. Many people are surprised to also find hearty and delicious sandwiches like the Dixie Pot Roast sandwich with horseradish sauce, Italian Sausage and a Sweet Sassafras Barbecue Sandwich.

eNoodles

110 U.S. 17 S.

North Myrtle Beach

663-1628

This is not your ordinary Asian restaurant. With a sophisticated and relaxing décor, the food is definitely a cut above your neighborhood take-out joint. The double pan-fried noodles are awesome.

Filet’s

2120 Sea Mountain Highway

at Harbourgate Marina

by the Swing Bridge

North Myrtle Beach

280-5200

The sushi here is excellent, as are the steaks, seafood and incredible views of the Intracoastal Waterway and the expensive boats docked at Harbourgate Marina. This is a huge restaurant with lower- and upper-level seating, and loads of both indoor and outdoor seating. A few menu items include Prime Rib, Stuffed Grouper, Chicken Oscar, Beef & Brie Salad and Filet Neptune.

Fire Island Grille

4924 U.S. 17 S.

In Barefoot Landing

North Myrtle Beach

272-FIRE (3473)

www.fireislandgrille.com

A Pacific Rim/Caribbean theme infuses the décor and the menu, with dishes such as Mayan Crab Cakes, Asian Shrimp Salad, Muffuletta Panini, Swordfish Skewers, Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna and Cuban Mojo Pork Chops.

Greg Norman’s Australian Grille

4930 U.S. 17 S.

Barefoot Landing

North Myrtle Beach

361-0000

www.shark.com/australiangrille

While you’d think this would be all about golf, Greg Norman’s namesake restaurant offers fine dining in gorgeous surroundings. Much Aboriginal artwork is on display, and the Outback décor is plush and inviting. The Intracoastal Waterway view and live piano music in the lounge are bonuses. The menu is unforgettable with items like Seafood Spring Rolls, Lobster-crusted Swordfish and a wealth of wood-grilled dishes such as Veal Chop and Yellowfin Tuna.

Hamburger Heaven

406 Sea Mountain Highway

Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach

280-BEEF (2333)

Open for lunch and dinner daily (except Sunday, when they close at 4 p.m.), this new hamburger spot really is heavenly. Burgers of course are the main attraction, and the more than a dozen choices. There are also fresh-cut fries, crunchy and large onion rings, Fried Grouper Bites, Mini Burgers, Homemade Chili without beans, Wings, Oriental Veggie Pasta Salad, Cheeseburger Salad, Grouper Salad, Grilled Pimiento Cheese Sandwich, BLT’s, Grilled Bologna Sandwich and a quarter-pound Hot Dog that folks brag about.

House of Blues

4640 U.S. 17 South

In Barefoot Landing

North Myrtle Beach

272-3000

www.hob.com

If you’ve never been to the House of Blues Sunday Gospel Brunch, you’re missing out on a lavish spread and joyous live gospel entertainment. Diners go into the kitchen and help themselves to an incredible spread featuring loads of seafood, Creole specialties and an omelet bar. There is also a breakfast buffet Mondays through Saturdays. For lunch and dinners, the menu features dishes such as Pan-seared Voodoo Shrimp with Rosemary Cornbread and Dixie Beer Reduction; Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich with Tennessee Barbecue Sauce, Coleslaw and Sweet Potato Fries; Louisiana Shrimp Creole served over Pan-seared Catfish Fillet with White Rice and Sautéed Green Beans; and Raspberry and Granny Smith Apple Bread Pudding.

International Kitchen

Parkway Plaza

Just west of North Myrtle Beach on S.C. 9

399-3668

Husband and wife owners Mietek and Elizabeth Fiut, and their sons, Derek and Mark Fiut, are serving specialties from their native Poland plus a broad range of other cuisines including Greek, Italian, German, Asian and American. The atmosphere is part diner and part upscale with its exposition kitchen where Derek, a graduate of the culinary arts program at Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, and his father and brother work hard to hustle out orders. International Kitchen also has a Family Size Menu available for delivery and carry-out. You need to order at least one hour in advance, and then you can have the Schnitzel, Scampis, Chicken Parmesan, Pierogis and Golobki in the comfort of your home or office.

Joe’s Bar & Grill

810 Conway Ave.

Across from Barefoot Landing

North Myrtle Beach

272-4666

www.dinejoes.com

It’s hard to explain how a restaurant can serve extremely upscale food in a comfortable casual atmosphere, but Joe’s pulls it off. Not to say the ambiance isn’t well-heeled, because the restaurant is beautifully appointed. But the feeling is one of a lavishly fun vacation rather than prim properness. Just relax and enjoy the marsh view and the menu, like Southern Traditional Trout stuffed with crab and served with Southern Comfort Mushroom Cream Sauce; or Hickory Smoked Chicken with a Bourbon Pecan Glaze.

Marina Raw Bar

U.S. 17 at Vereen’s Marina

North Myrtle Beach

249-3972

Situated by a marina off the Intracoastal Waterway, the nice view of yachts does not overshadow the delights of a bucket of steamed oysters, a nice piece of flounder or a soft shell crab.

Molly Darcy’s Irish Pub & Restaurant

1701 S. Ocean Blvd.

North Myrtle Beach

272-5555

www.mollydarcy.com

Molly Darcy’s, which has one other location in Connecticut, is a great place to eat and a fun spot in which to hang out and party. Diners can walk right up from the beach or enter via Ocean Boulevard and sit outside on the shaded veranda or stay inside to shoot pool and play darts. Whether seated inside or out, diners can enjoy lunch and dinner with choices such as Whiskey Wings, Shepherd’s Pie, Irish Smoked Salmon, Corned Beef on Rye, Dublin Fish & Chips and Molly’s Chicken Supreme. In the evenings a DJ provides dance music.

Nick’s New York Pub

113 U.S. 17 North at Second Avenue North

North Myrtle Beach

249-7600

NicksNewYorkPub.com

The menu at Nick’s is not your normal bar food. Appetizers include Central Park Pretzels, Little Italy Calamari, Brooklyn Ribs, Staten Island Mini Burgers and Park Avenue Tuna. There are half-pound burgers with a choice of interesting toppings, French onion soup, a Metropolitan Spring Salad and the Empire Chef Salad. A long list of sandwiches includes the Lou Gehrig Grilled Cheese with ham or bacon and sliced tomatoes; Babe Ruth BBQ; Willie Mays Club; The Godfather Steak; and a Coney Island Dog. For dinner you can get a New York Strip, Steak au Poivre, a Big Apple Pork Chop and Red Hook Shrimp. For dessert, of course there is New York Cheesecake. It is open starting at 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

SeaBlue

503 U.S. 17 N.

North Myrtle Beach

249-8800

www.seablueonline.com

This romantic little restaurant has quickly earned a stellar reputation for its tapas (small-portion plates) and discriminating wine list. Chef proprietor Kelly Graham creates exciting menus with dishes such as Pan Fried Black Bass with creamed leeks, celery heart and grape salad.

Side Street Café

1000 Second Ave. S.

In the North Myrtle Beach Corporate Center

North Myrtle Beach

280-3799

This new breakfast and lunch spot is airy-yet-cozy with a sleek-yet-homey décor. For breakfast there are Egg Tacos with scrambled eggs, potatoes and cheese; Sol Quesadilla with eggs, potatoes, bacon and cheese; and breakfast sandwiches on bagels, English muffins or panini bread. For lunch you can choose from several salads like the Greek Salad with feta, tomatoes, black olives and mild peppers, or sandwiches such as a Pork Tenderloin Hoagie or a Ribeye Steak Sandwich with sautéed onions; there are also daily lunch specials.

North Myrtle Beach

663-9300

http://www.thaiseasonmyrtlebeach.com

We recommend: Shrimp Cake Appetizer, Thai Dumpling, Steamed Mussels, Veggie Spring Roll, Chicken Fried Rice Crispy Chicken in a Sweet Chili Sauce, Basil Duck, Garlic Pepper, Ginger Thai Style, Sauteed Glass Noodle and Swimming Angels (steamed chicken and shrimp topped with peanut sauce over steamed broccoli, tomatoes and cilantro.)
