Conway

Conway is the Horry County seat located 15 miles west of Myrtle Beach. Its historic district butts up against the Waccamaw River, and the Riverwalk is a lovely place to stroll.

One of the town’s most striking features is the many ancient live oaks shrouded in Spanish moss. The trees are revered so much that roads have been built to curve around the trees rather than lose the trees just for the sake of a straight street.

The downtown area is a fine example of vintage small town Southern architecture. Learn more about Conway at www.conwaymainstreet.com.

Crady’s

332 Main St.

Conway

248-3321

It has been a pleasure to watch this intimate café evolve into the gourmet haven it is today. Whether you choose a Spinach and Dried Fig Sandwich, Shrimp and Scallop Pesto Pasta Horseradish Hash Brown Topped Salmon, you’ll be delighted you stopped by. And this is definitely a place where you’ll want to save room for desserts like Hershey Bar Pie.

Fats at the Warehouse

104-A Laurel St.

Conway

248-FATS (3287)

Owners Paul and Nora Sanders have served casual diners for almost 20 years. The burger is a juicy hand-patted delight, and there are homemade crabcakes that Nora says are made using a handed-down family recipe. They also have Grilled Mahi-Mahi, a grilled or fried Jumbo Shrimp Dinner, Ribeye Steak, a Triple Decker Club Basket and Marinated Chicken. The onion rings are large and tasty, and the fries, called Fats Fries, are hand-cut and served in gracious-plenty portions. There’s also a special late-night menu served after 10 p.m. that includes Fried Okra “Rangs” and Fat’s Fried Egg Sandwich. They open at 3 p.m.

Frank’s Place

S.C. 544 in Coastal Commons Plaza

347-6049

Conway

The restaurant’s menu is centered on hot dogs and sausage dogs, which can come topped with mustard, ketchup, chili, onions, slaw or relish for no extra charge. The chili and slaw are both homemade; they have a slight sweetness, and the meat and cabbage are chopped fine for that perfect spreadable texture. A two hot dog combo costs $5.75 and comes with a side (potato salad, cole slaw or baked beans, all homemade; or chips), a choice of Moon Pies (banana, vanilla, chocolate) and a drink. You’ll go back in time with the drinks; some of the choices include glass bottles of R.C. Cola, Sundrop, Cheerwine, Nehi, Dr. Pepper and Sunkist. The Gutbuster Combo, which features a 10-inch, ½-pound all beef hot dog, costs $6.95. You can also get nachos, candy, Lance crackers and ice cream sandwiches. Peanuts in the shell are free of charge.

Oliver’s Luncheonette

1301 U.S. 501 Business

Conway

This is just what a really great weekday working person’s Southern burger and barbecue restaurant should be: They’re frills-free and have fantastic food. For breakfast you can enjoy a sandwich like steak, ham & egg, country ham, bologna or BLT, and some hash rounds. At lunchtime the burgers are made from beef ground on-site, and you can get them with slaw, grilled onions and/or chili if you want. Barbecue sandwiches are tasty – they make their own – and you can also order a sausage dog, pork chop sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, double bologna sandwich and a steak sandwich. The dining room is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and the drive-through stays open until 3 p.m.
