Saturday, February 6, 2010, Myrtle Beach - Even if you never knew his name or the name of his company, if you have lived in the Myrtle Beach area any length of time you’ve likely tasted the work of executive pastry chef Irvin Pereira. Now in addition to his wholesale business, he and wife Jessica Pereira have a new retail shop.
Since 1992, a little wholesale shop in North Myrtle Beach was the home of Pereira’s business called Icey Pastries, which is a division of Icey Productions. His cakes, sweets and full-service catering has been featured at The Dunes Club, Grande Dunes, Island Vista, Crown Reef, The Surf Club and more, as well as at countless private celebrations.Chef Pereira says he opened a retail shop so more people could see and enjoy his sweets and breads, which is why the new shop in Carolina Forest is called I See Pastries. It is at 4006 Postal Way, in the former location of A Touch of Class bakery.
The cute little shop is sunny and filled with art from local artists, which is all for sale. A few two-top tables are available for enjoying a slice of something and a cup of coffee while listening to the music of the day, which is all from independent artists and also for sale.
But the main items you can buy are edible, and they are priced less than what many other bakeries charge. Small cookies are 75 cents, while large cookies and big Black-and-White Cookies are $1.50. Chocolate Truffles, which can come with cherries inside, are $1 each, while for $1.50 you can have Doughnuts, Cheese or Cherry Danish, Monkey Bread, Muffins, Turnovers, Croissants, Sticky Buns, Crumb Buns Bagels, Eclairs and Cannolis.
Mini two-bite tars are 85 cents, while larger tarts are $2.50 and a full-size Apple Tart is $12. There are Bread Puddings, with our without chocolate, you can take home and warm so as to fully enjoy their sweet gooiness. Some cakes, like a round Chocolate Chocolate Torte, are $20 while others, such as a half-chocolate and half-vanilla cake or a Triple Chocolate Cheesecake, or a full-size Strawberry Shortcake, are $25 each.Of course you can order wedding, birthday and other special event cakes. Those prices are $25 for a 9-inch round or a quarter sheet, $40 for a half sheet, and $70 for a full sheet.

I See Pastries also has freshly baked bread three times a week. I tried the herbed loaf and the long (about a foot long!) crispy/soft breadsticks, which were both scrumptious. Rolls are 69 cents each, breadsticks are 50 cents, and French baguettes are $2.50.
Some specials are being offered for Valentine’s Day, such as heart-shape Strawberries and Cream Cake for $15; Grand Marnier Chocolate Truffles for $1 each; and Jumbo Chocolate Covered Strawberries for $1 each. You can get six of the truffles in a pretty silver box tied with a pink ribbon for $6.
Smoothies cost $2.50 and are made with non-fat yogurt. Flavors include peach, strawberry, mixed berry, blueberry and banana.
All other beverages cost 99 cents: coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate, soda, bottled water, milk and tea.
When asked why prices are so modest, Jessica Pereira said, “The economy is not good and we’d rather have people be able to come in and enjoy our quality baked goods you get at really good prices.
Although I See Pastries has been open only for six days, on Thursday a steady stream of customers stopped by in the mid-afternoon. Two of them even called back after going home and eating their goodies to say it was delicious and they’d be back.
The normal business hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, but through Valentine’s Day they’ll also be open this Monday, and will remain open until the after-work crowd has had a chance to stop by for sweet gifts. The number is (843) 957-7739.
